MARGAO: The Goa Forward (GF) Party on Friday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has circumvented all rules to register 600 persons from the Indian Army posted at the MTR camp at Rawanfond as general voters in the Navelim constituency.
Addressing media persons, a GF spokesperson said that 600 army personnel were registered as voters at Navelim on January 18, 2017 during the final round of summary registration and further pointed out that it was also the last date for filing of nominations for the Assembly elections.
He pointed out that service voters may be registered as general voters at the place of their posting only if the voter has remained at that place for a sufficient period of time along with their families and implied that many of the army personnel who were registered as general voters were not living with the families.
Further, he also alleged that the Booth Level Officer’s report, which is mandatory, was not sought in the case of registering these service voters as regular voters. Besides, they said the Commanding Officer of the Army cannot be the verifying officer for service voters registering as general voters.
Goa Forward Party alleged that the enrollment of the service voters as regular voters on the last date for filing nominations indicates that the whole process was “not taken up under the authority, control, supervision and superintendence of the Election Commission of India.”
