PANJIM: Lakhs of priceless manuscripts and records dating back to the Portuguese era currently in the State Archives Department at Rua de Ourem face ruin. The Directorate concedes that the preservation of the documents requires sufficient space which the existing structure lacks. Efforts to identify an alternative space did not fetch positive results and the department has now moved the Collectorate to identify a vacant premises.

“The Directorate of Archives is presently facing acute shortage of space to acquire and store archival records. The Directorate has moved a proposal to the government for allocation of vacant space in order to have a new building. The process for identification of vacant land by the Collectorate is under progress,” Archives and Archaeology Minister Dayanand Mandrekar said. Owing to this problem, it has also slowed the process to collect and preserve old records from different depts.

The department is considered among the most-neglected departments owing to a series of problems including no proper solution to maintenance of old data. Right from lack of space to staff crunch and lack of new technology, the department faces a bunch of problems threatening the survival of the documents. The preservation of the records has been a matter of debate even as the department is going through the manual method using chemical treatment.

Amidst structural problems, digitization, scanning and micro filming of the records began following directions from the High Court of Bombay at Goa. Mandrekar said that it has completed the process for birth and death records from the years 1914 to 1970.
