PANJIM: After the death of its founder leader Shashikala (Tai) Kakodkar, the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) has convened condolence meetings on November 5 and 6 to remember departed soul of former Goa chief minister Shashikala Kakodkar.

Kakodkar was heading BBSM since 2011 when it was formed to oppose the decision of the then Digambar Kamat-led Congress government to give grants to English medium schools.

“The condolence meeting would be held on November 5 in Panjim and on November 6 in Margao,” BBSM convener Subhash Velingkar said.

He said that meetings would be also arranged to chalk out further strategies to intensify the agitation against the government which had gone against their own 2012 election manifesto promise.

Kakodkar passed away on October 28 after a prolonged illness. The final rites were performed on October 29 at Panjim.

“All the well wishers of Kakodkar are invited to attend these meetings, people from different spectrum will also attend this meeting,” Velingkar said.

Kakodkar became chief minister of Goa, Daman and Diu Union territories in 1973 after the death of her father, while still in office. The father-daughter duo was leaders in Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). She continued to rule the union territories till 1979 when she was ousted by a split within her party.

In the recent years, she was associated with Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM), a front which has been a crusader of mother tongue as medium of instruction in elementary education.

Kakodkar during her stint as State education minister was responsible for regional languages and no-English educational policy implemented in the government-aided primary schools in Goa.
