PANJIM: Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said the demand of the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) to withdraw grants to English medium schools cannot to be met due to administrative reasons. He also reiterated that he will not intervene in the medium of instruction (MoI) controversy.

He said the BJP and BBSM stand on MoI is the same except on the question of withdrawal of grants to some English schools. “Viewpoint of the government and viewpoint of BBSM is same except to withdraw the grants but due to administrative reasons government can’t do it,” Parrikar said.

BJP during its 2012 Assembly election campaign had assured that the mother tongue will be made the MoI at the elementary level.

Refusing to intervene in the controversy Parrikar said Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar will resolve the issue. “Chief Minister is going to talk to them (the agitators). The issue is of the State and I will not interfere in it,” Parrikar told reporters on Monday.

BBSM, that includes RSS leaders, has began agitating in the State demanding that the mother tongue be considered as MoI and seeking withdrawal of grants to English medium schools.

“CM has received a memorandum from BBSM listing out their demands. CM has to decide when to meet them and discuss the issue,” Parrikar said.

He said that his role in the matter is restricted to the party level. “CM has to find out solution for the problem. CM will be speaking to them. I am not the one who will decide on the issue,” he said.
