Say clearing backlog will be their main priority

PANJIM: The Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and the two State Information Commissioners (SICs) were sworn in by Chief Secretary R K Srivastava on Friday, filling up the long pending vacant posts. The post of CIC had fallen vacant in January 2015 while the SIC offices were without heads since September 2012.

Prashant Tendulkar was sworn in as new CIC, while Pratima Vernekar and Juino D’Souza were administered oath of office as new SICs. All three assumed charge immediately on Friday.

Tendulkar is a former additional president of the Goa State Administrative Tribunal, South, while Vernekar is a senior public prosecutor and D’Souza is a lawyer and social activist.

After the swearing-in, speaking to media persons Tendulkar said his main priority would be to reduce the pendency of cases, which are over 1500. “I am from a judicial background. I will have to study the procedure first to clear these pending complaints as well as appeals,” he said.

The CIC said that on priority older cases would be cleared first on a case-by-case basis. “I am taking charge today and I will see the number of pendency and also study the type of cases,” he said.

Tendulkar also emphasised on providing special training to public information officers (PIOs) on the correct use of Right to Information Act (RTI). He said that if it’s within his powers, there is need to provide proper directions to departments on effective implementation of the RTI Act.

“Maximum effort should be made to ensure that information sought by the public under RTI should be made available to them,” he added.
