MARGAO: Carmona residents hit the streets once more on Monday

This time to stop the panchayat’s allegedly illegal pond beautification project in Gavona, which is being undertaken through the auspices of the Water Resources Department.

The villagers alleged that panchayat was illegally carrying out the work without consulting or obtaining NOCs from the field owners.

They claimed that the project had killed the flora and fauna of the pond.

and that the boundary wall would prevent rainwater from draining into the pond, causing stagnation and water-logging, thereby rendering their fields uncultivable.

Police had to be called due to heated arguments between the panchayat and villagers at the site. The Carmona sarpanch assured to stop the work until the issue was sorted out.

Carmona residents are in a constant tussle with the panchayat over its decision to grant a licence for the Raheja project and the setting up of mobile towers in their village. They have alleged that the panchayat tried to discretely bulldoze village development proposals without consulting the gram sabha. They cited a children’s park and water tank proposal in Kirbatt, which they resolved to oppose tooth-and-nail.
