PANJIM: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday advised Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar to be more circumspect and careful in future while making statements, even as it observed that the Union Minister has violated the election code of conduct though his bribery remark.

“All leaders, especially those who occupy high constitutional positions, are expected to ensure and promote the sanctity of electoral process. Public utterances by such persons which even remotely give indications of condoning act of accepting bribe in connection with election are not acceptable as it could amount to encouraging bribery in election which, apart from being an electoral offence, is also a corrupt practice,” the Commission’s letter to Parrikar states.

“The Commission observes that your statement violates the above norms. Accordingly, the commission advises you to be more circumspect and careful in future,” it stated.

AAP National Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Goa Forward Party had filed complaint against Parrikar alleging that the Union Minister during a corner meeting in Chimbel in St Cruz constituency instigated voters to take money.
