PANJIM: St Cruz MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate’s candidates, Surendra Furtado and Lata Parekh, have taken over as Panjim’s Mayor and deputy Mayor respectively.

The duo was elected unopposed as no candidates from BJP’s Panjim First filed their nomination for the posts on Monday.

Panjim MLA Siddharth Kunkolienkar had earlier said that BJP would field candidates for the two posts only if the winning panel did not wish to take charge of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP).

“I have filed my nomination for the post of Mayor. All my strategies for the betterment of Panjim will be taken tomorrow (Tuesday),” Furtado said.

This will be Furtado’s second tenure as Mayor after serving as Mayor in 2013-14. Furtado defeated BJP’s Gaurish Dhond by securing 371 votes against the latter’s 269 in ward number 10. Whereas Parekh won by 589 votes against BJP’s Suraiya Naik who managed to get 285 votes from ward number 14.

Monserrate’s panel won in 17 wards against BJP’s 13. Congress, which was also in the fray, did not win a single ward.
