MARGAO: The Goa Heritage Action Group, led by historian Prajal Sakhardande, has extended its support to the Carmona locals who are opposing the use of cement for the proposed beautification of the Gavona Lake.

GHAG members and other activists, like Armando Gonsalves of Goa for Giving, visited the spot that has become the latest flashpoint between the villagers and the panchayat and PWD.

Calling it a heritage site, Sakhardande said the Gavona Carmona Heritage Lotus Pond is a small, beautiful piece of Goa’s natural

heritage.

“Its natural heritage ambience is being disturbed and tampered with by the construction of a cement stone wall, which will not allow free breathing for the birds and buffaloes in the lotus pond. Beautification is required, but not concretisation,” said Sakhardande, while extending support to the Carmona locals’

agitation.

It may be recalled that Carmona locals had earlier confronted the PWD over various irregularities in the project and have been protesting against it for a few months now.
