PANJIM: The Goa University (GU) has set a target to upload close to 10,000 articles in the Konkani language on the Goan Konkani Wikipedia that went live after a nine-year-long incubation period on Saturday.

The ‘free encyclopedia’, which has tied up with GU and Nirmala Institute of Education, contains over 2,500 Konkani articles written and uploaded by over 100 authors and contributors.

With the demand to create separate sections on Goan cuisines and an online dictionary in the native language, the Department of Konkani at GU is contemplating to assign various projects to its students to further raise the bar of Konkani Wikipedia.

“We will assign projects to our students and writers too, to write articles on different subjects related to Goa and upload them on the Wikipedia. This will include information on local food, its culture, tradition, tourist spots and much more,” Dr Prakash Parienkar, GU Head of Department of Konkani told Herald. He said he is certain to meet the target in the next two to three years.

“The articles will be written in Konkani. This attempt will promote the local language in the state and world over,” he added.

A seminar organized by the Department of Konkani to encourage contribution to the Konkani Wikipedia remembered late Dr Madhavi Sardesai, also a professor at GU, for playing a vital role in introducing the project.

Lokmat Editor Raju Nayak urged students to learn the Wiki-technique in a bid to generate employment opportunities to locals besides expressing the need to start a cuisine section in Konkani. He was supported by Konkani poet Madhav Borkar who also suggested an online Konkani dictionary.
