MARGAO: The door-to-door garbage collectors have demanded higher remuneration from Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and also called upon the municipality to renew their work contract.

MARGAO: The door-to-door garbage collectors have demanded higher remuneration from Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and also called upon the municipality to renew their work contract.

The workers met Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and MMC Chairperson Babita Angle and extracted an assurance to fulfil their demands soon.  The municipality employs 60-70 workers for door-to-door garbage collection.

A garbage collector complained that the workers have been receiving little over Rs 4,000 as the remuneration, so far; that they have not received their December salaries till date.

He also complained that the municipality had promised to sign a separate contract with them for working on Sundays, but the same has not been done, so far.

A senior municipal officer decried the treatment of workers by the municipality saying, “What kind of municipality is this, where a worker works on his off day, but denied his remuneration for that day.”
