PANJIM: Cumbharjua Congress MLA Pandurang Madkaikar on Thursday formally quit the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the second time, reducing the Congress legislative strength to six. Addressing the media, Madkaikar said, “I was not happy in Congress. The Congress state leadership has failed completely and there is no future for Congress in the State. I learned a lot in the last 12 years and realized that I had made a mistake of quitting the BJP and joining Congress in 2005.” He added, “The main reason I had left BJP when Parrikar was CM was because Congress was a strong party and they had a government at the Centre but two months later I realized that I had made a mistake.” BJP President, Vinay Tendulkar refused to disclose if Madkaikar would be given a party ticket from Cumbharjua for the 2017 elections.
Former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had earlier directed the anti-corruption branch (ACB) of Goa Police to probe the alleged land purchased by Madkaikar in Old Goa., which had been earmarked for a police station.
Parrikar, who was present during Madkaikar’s induction in the BJP, on being asked whether he continues to support the allegations made against Madkaikar said, “An enquiry is being conducted and I will have to find out the status of the enquiry. If the enquiry finds something adverse then necessary action will be taken.”
