Rich tributes paid to the departed leader on his 66th birthday; function organised by GRA

CORTALIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar unveiled the statue of late Matanhy Saldanha at Cansaulim on Friday.

The function which was organised by Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) on the occasion of Saldanha’s 66th birth anniversary was however affected by heavy rains which forced the cutting short of the unveiling function.

In his short speech, Parrikar said the very fact that it rained was a good omen. “Soon after I garlanded his statue it started raining. So it is a good omen,” said Parrikar.

In her speech, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha recalled the sacrifices her late husband made for the interest of Goa and Goans.

GRE President Agnelo Rodrigues recalled the contribution made by Matanhy not only to Ramponkars but on all issues which he felt would be harmful for Goa. “Whether it was Nylon 66, Meta Strips, workers’ issue, Matanhy always led from the front. Matanhy did not forget Ramponkars and Ramponkars did not forget Matanhy,” Rodrigues said adding that he enjoyed a personal relationship with Matanhy since 1974.

Later, Parrikar felicitated Fr Braz Faleiro, former GRE president Pascoal Dias and GRE President Agnelo Rodrigues with a gold coin with Matanhy’s picture on it.

Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, South Goa MP Narendra Savoikar and villagers from Cansaulim and nearby villages attended the function.
