Margao:

Former Sanvordem MLA and top mining barron Anil Salgaocar passed away on Friday morning in Singapore. He was 75.

Sources close to the Salgaocars stated that the final rites will be performed in Singapore.

The owner of Salgaocar Mining Industries Private Limited, Anil was born on December 26, 1940, and was the son of Vasudev Salgaocar and brother of Shivanand and Dattaraj Salgaocar. He was one of the biggest mining barons and also one of the largest providers of earthmoving equipment for mining in Goa.

Anil had recently received fresh summons from the Mining Special Investigation Team (SIT) for his alleged role in the mining scam, after which he had gone to Singapore. He had contested the 2007 Assembly elections from Sanvordem Constituency as an Independent and got elected after defeating Vinay Tendulkar of the BJP by a margin of over 7,000 votes.

Anil had recently celebrated his 75th birthday in Singapore. After receiving news of his ill-health, his entire family went there and has remained there since. He is survived by his wife Laxmi, sons Sameer and Arjun and daughters Chandana and Purnima.

Offering condolences, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said, “Salgaocar was one of the leading mine owners in the State and had made significant contributions in the fields of

industry, economics, politics and social welfare,” Parsekar said.

“He was also instrumental in addressing the problems of people residing in the mining belt. With the demise of Salgaocar, the State had lost a great industrialist, politician and social worker," he added.

Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Narayan (Nana) Bandekar condoled the death and recalled his association with Salgaocar. Bandekar said the late industrialist was a dashing and innovative businessman who was never averse to taking risks and facing challenges.
