PANJIM: Staying the controversial construction and repair of bund at Siolim, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) refused to grant State government authorities time for further submission, stating it will lead to further environmental damage.
Water Resources Department had sought two weeks for elaborate submissions before any interim relief is granted. However, NGT rejected this. “Grant of time will not only cost the environment but also cost the public exchequer in terms of the waste exercise undertaken,” the tribunal stated.
NGT in an order issued on July 12, directed WRD to immediately stop the construction on the Tarchem Khazan-Siolim bund. The final hearing in the matter has been fixed on July 19.
NGT western zone bench, Pune was hearing a petition filed by one Suvarnasangeet Vernekar, representing tenants of agricultural fields, who had sought interim relief in form of a stay on the alleged illegal project undertaken without environmental clearance.
Vernekar had claimed that the construction work had damaged agricultural.
