Pernem to get a makeover in view of Mopa airport

PANJIM: With various projects, including the proposed Mopa airport concentrated in Pernem, the State government has initiated steps to improve infrastructure in the taluka in a bid to attract tourists.

PANJIM: With various projects, including the proposed Mopa airport concentrated in Pernem, the State government has initiated steps to improve infrastructure in the taluka in a bid to attract tourists. 

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Thursday laid the foundation stone for works, including construction of a traffic island, signages, beautification and illumination from Siolim bridge to Chopdem junction, and construction of parking and public amenities at Ashwem beach.

According to project details, the road from Siolim bridge to the beaches of Morjim, Ashwem, Arambol and Keri is narrow and poses a danger to tourists. It thus entails providing proper illumination, footpaths, signages and other facilities for proper connectivity and safety.

Tourism department through this project also plans to develop the road junction and provide footpaths on either side of the road, improvement to geometrics and widening of the road to 8.5 metres, illumination of the road and footpath, road signages, traffic island and enhance the outlook and beauty of the place. 

Parsekar said the work, approved by the government, has been awarded to Bagkiya Constructions Pvt Ltd at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore.

The second part of the project includes construction of parking and public amenities at Ashwem beach. Under this, it has been proposed to provide separate toilets and changing room blocks for men and women and two shower rooms, parking area for 15 cars and 50 two-wheelers, illumination and landscaping and a security cabin. This work has been awarded to South East Constructions Pvt Ltd at an estimated cost of Rs 95 lakh.
