MARGAO: Panchayats across Salcete have criticised the State government for its mishandling of the Regional Plan 2021 (RP21).

At panchayat meetings, villagers have questioned how it is possible to verify the RP21 and send it back to the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department by the end of the month when it was sent to the panchayats only last week.

The Raia panchayat has written to the TCP asking that it officially send the plan to the panchayat office. While the panchayat has collected the plan for the benefit of the villagers, many panchayats have expressed their frustration with the TCP for asking them to visit the TCP office and collect the plan. The panchayats felt it was a time-consuming process, and time is of the essence given that the plan has been kept open only for a month.

The Camurlim panchayat, at a village meeting, decided to send its suggestions and corrections to the TCP, but also called for more time to study the RP.

The Chinchinim-Deussua gram sabha has unanimously resolved that the government grant more time to study the RP, failing which the villagers would agitate on the streets.

While similar meetings are being held at other panchayats in Salcete, many people are expected to attend the public meeting at Lohia Maidan, Margao, on Monday, where a presentation on the regional plan will be made by the concerned citizens.

It may be recalled that the Navelim special gram sabha, which was attended by the Navelim MLA, had called for scrapping the RP21. Similarly, the Carmona Villagers’ Social Welfare Forum has threatened to move the courts on the issue, while Carmona locals have planned to hold a protest when the chief minister visits Colva to inaugurate a sewerage project.
