MARGAO: Salcete residents are aghast at the quality of water being supplied to them on days when water supply is restricted. Residents from Fatorda, Margao and the coastal belt have complained about receiving dark brown water.

MARGAO: Salcete residents are aghast at the quality of water being supplied to them on days when water supply is restricted.

Residents from Fatorda, Margao and the coastal belt have complained about receiving dark brown water.

Dr Hubert Gomes from Benaulim said that till Monday they were receiving this kind of contaminated water. “We were getting muddy water until yesterday. And this kind of thing happened last year too, during March and April,” said Dr Hubert.

Kennedy Afonso said, “It is not just Benaulim village but the entire coastal belt that has been suffering from the same situation.”

In Fatorda, locals started collecting the darkened water in bottles and glasses to show to the PWD the reality in view of officials brushing aside their complaints.

“This is not the first time this has happened. As a result, our water filters have also got damaged and it is not easy to replace the filters all the time. This causes a lot of hardship; we have to make arrangements for bathing, gardening and clean drinking water as well,” said Thomas Fernandes, a Fatorda resident.

Arun Kamat from Verna criticised the absence of any supervisory system or testing to ensure that such things do not take place. “Given that this is a recurring issue, the PWD should look at immediate solutions and should have issued a public notice to inform the public,” Kamat said. 

Kamat opined that the public should not be made to pay for contaminated water.
