PANJIM: Sanquelim legislator Dr Pramod Sawant is likely to be the new Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly with the BJP legislative wing proposing his name to the chair.
The party leaders met on Monday to officially announce his name, election of which is scheduled on Day I of the Budget Session of the Assembly on Wednesday. The party has, however, not decided the deputy Speaker.
“We have proposed Dr Sawant as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The finalisation of Deputy
Speaker will be done shortly,” party President Vinay Tendulkar told Herald.
Sources said the coalition partners will support Sawant’s candidature.
The Congress party that has 16 legislators in the 40-member House is yet to announce its candidate.
The three-day budget session will commence on Wednesday with the Speaker’s election followed by Governor Dr Mridula Sinha’s speech on Thursday and presentation of budget by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Congress Legislative Party will meet tomorrow to finalise their candidate for Speaker's post.
