MARGAO, APRIL 16
UGDP South Goa candidate, Matanhy Saldanha has said the Congress never bothered to accord special status for Goa and protect the States identity even though Indias first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru had promised such a status in 1963.
He demanded that the special status demanded by the people of Goa is under Article 371 of the Constitution and not an economic status or status for industries.
Reacting to the assurance by Congress president to consider the demand for special status for protecting the interests of fishermen, Matanhy said the Congress has sold out Goa with Congress leaders acting as real estate agents to sell Goas scarce land to the outsiders. The special status being demanded by the people of Goa is to protect Goas social, culture, economy, polity and identity, he asserted.
On Ms Gandhis assurance to protect the traditional fishermen, Matanhy said its nearly two years since the helpless fishermen have been running from pillar to post to save their structures, but the Congress party did nothing for the poor people. Where was Francisco Sardinha in the last one year. Why did he not move the Centre and got the CRZ notification amended to protect the traditional fishermen, he asked.
The UGDP candidate said besides special status, the Congress is silent on relaxing the BPL norms for Goans who cannot afford to buy essential commodities from the open market. The Congress and BJP did nothing on this issue. They have only fooled the people with empty promises, he said and added the UGDP practices what we preaches
Saldanha also demanded to know from Sardinha whether he has taken up with the centre the need for Railway over Bridges and Rail under bridges in Goa once the KRC and South Central railway lays the second line. We are not against the second line per se, but where is the question of infrastructure. Unless these bridges are put in place, congestion will be the order of the day at the numerous crossings, he added..
Referring to Ms Gandhis statement congratulating the NGOs for the fight to protect the environment, Matanhy said on the one hand, she congratulates the NGOs, while on the other the mining leases are renewed near forests and water dams. Even Congress leaders had condemned the NGOs for their relentless battle to protect the environment and rights.
UGDP Secretary General lamented that one hardly finds any Goans on the stalls set up at the railway stations in Goa. Even the land loosers are now not considered for the stalls, leave alone providing jobs to their families.
