Differing Margao taxi panels at war

MARGAO: Margao police received complaints and counter complaints as two groups of taxi drivers and operators clashed at the pre-paid counter outside the Margao railway station. While president of the Margao Taxi Drivers and Operators Association Sandeep Arlekar lodged a complaint that some taxi operators entered near the pre-paid taxi counter and allegedly threatened the billing clerk and forcibly took their passengers, the rival group represented by Bento Fernandes claimed that a taxi operator Manuel Baretto was assaulted by the other group and had to be hospitalised with injuries. Both the groups have requested Margao PI Sudesh Naik to take cognisance of the matter and initiate necessary action. 

Cop accused of rape suspended

ANJUNA: Head Constable Rupesh Narvekar from Moira, who has been arrested on charges of raping a woman from Arambol-Pernem, has been suspended from service and has been remanded to police custody till January 12. According to reports, Narvekar was arrested on Thursday on charges of raping the woman multiple times after promising to marry her.

Two held with drugs at Saligao

SALIGAO: Two persons – one each from Maharashtra and Kerala, were arrested on charges of possessing drugs worth Rs 2.75 lakh at Saligao on Thursday. According to Saligao police, the accused Riyaz Ibrahim Malbari of Maharashtra and Ajmal Majeed Khan of Kerala were caught red-handed in illegal possession of Amphetamines (8.75 grams), MDMA (1.40 grams) and LSD (0.42 grams), all worth Rs 2.75 lakh. The accused, who were nabbed at the main gate of the Catholic cemetery at Saligao, have been booked under Section 22 (b) & 22 (c) R/w 29 of NDPS Act.

Geeta Gyana Yagna at Margao 

PANJIM: Annual Geeta Gyana Yagna-2015 organized by Chinmaya Mission Margao, at Ravindra Bhavan began on January 6 and will conclude on January 11. The yagna is from 6.30 pm to 8 pm. The text is Bhagawad Geeta Chapter XII (Bhakti Yoga) in Hindi. Brahmaleen Swami Chinmayanandajis Shishya Abhedananda will give discourse. Morning session will be in Chinmaya Krishna Ashram, Gogol on Shiva Sankalpa Suktam in Hindi from January 7 to 11, from 7 am to 8 am. The birth centenary of Gurudev is on May 8, 2016 and to mark this occasion Chinmaya Mission will begin year-long celebrations on May 8, from Ernakulum.

Results of trade test of craftsmen

PANJIM: The result of the 2nd Semester, 1st Semester (ex-failed) of All India Trade Test of Craftsmen under semester pattern, August-2014 and 2nd Semester and 1st Semester (ex-failed) of All Goa Trade Test of Craftsmen under semester pattern August-2014, held in August 2014, have been declared. The result sheet is displayed on the notice board in respective ITIs. All the ex-failed trainees wish to apply for re-valuation of marks should submit their applications in prescribed proforma by January 9. The ex-failed trainees of 2nd Semester and 1st Semester NCVT and All Goa Trade Test of Craftsmen SCVT  should approach respective ITIs to re-appear should fill the forms and submit them by January 9. 

Old Goa traffic plan to continue 

PANJIM: The exposition Committee has decided that the movement of traffic and general traffic arrangements at Old Goa which was arranged during Exposition will continue up to January 31 as the fair stalls adjoining Gandhi Circle and peripheral roads are likely to be removed by January 15. Also all internal roads in the exposition zone are scheduled for black topping. This arrangement will also facilitate movement of material from the dismantled structures which are required to be removed and area restored to its original condition by January 25.

Cuncolim school benefactors' mass

PANJIM: Our Lady of Health High School Cuncolim, is having a benefactors' mass on January 10, at 8.30 am in Cuncolim Church for all the benefactors of the school. The mass will be celebrated by the parish priest Fr Manuel Fernandes. All the benefactors of the school are requested to attend the mass. Meanwhile the school will also conduct a special holy hour on January 14, on the occasion of canonization of Fr Joseph Vaz in Sri Lanka by Pope Francis. The holy hour will be conducted by Dominican Priest Fr Sunoj from Orlim.

Vishwas is Damodar HSS PTA chairman

PANJIM: In a meeting of the PTA of Shree Damodar Higher Secondary School of Science, Vishwas Nayak was elected unopposed as the Chairman of the PTA working committee. He called on the parents to co-operate with the Principal and management. The executive members of the working committee are Achala Navelkar (Secretary), Neema B Amonkar (Vice-President), Harish Lawande (Treasurer). The members are Vinita V Bandikatte, Sudin Prabhudesai, Satywan Raut Desai, Pervis B Gomes. 

PWD painting contest prizes given

PANJIM: The PWD conducted a school painting competition prize distribution ceremony cum display of paintings at Kala Academy as part of the Goa Water Supply and Sewerage Project. The competition was held across Sanguem, Quepem, Bardez, Mormugao and Salcette in around 25 schools. More than 2000 students participated. The prize distribution ceremony was inaugurated by Sudin Dhavalikar, Minister for PWD. A M Wachasundar, Project Director- JICA, Hamanu, Sanjay Harmalkar and Wilfred Goes were present. More than 100 paintings by students were displayed. The prize winners were Nadeem Malik (GHS-Vasco), Shrinjal Kurale (Gomantak Vidhyalaya, Sanguem) Samuel Rodrigues (King's School, Margao),

Nikshat Naik (Sarvodaya HS, Quepem) and Kapil Gadgil (Shri Vasant Vidhyalaya, Siolim). 


Vasco Ayyappa temple mahotsavam

PANJIM: The annual utsavam of Sree Ayyappa Temple, Vasco will be celebrated from January 14 to 21, with the vedic/thantric poojas and rituals by Thantri Katikakkol Illath Sreekanth Nampoothiri and other priests. cultural programmes will be staged during this period. A procession with the idol of Lord Ayyappa on a decorated elephant accompanied by vadyam Chentamelam, Thalappoli of ladies and girls and folk dances, etc will be routed through Vasco on January 21. The Utsavam rituals at the temple will begin on Jan 13 with Sudhi followed by Kotiyettam on January 14, at 6.30 pm. Salgaocar HSS holds annual day

PANJIM: The annual prize distribution function of Vidya Vikas Mandal’s Ramacrisna Madeva Salgaocar HSS, Margao was held on January 3, in the Ganesh Daivajna auditorium. The President of VVM Ganesh Daivajna welcomed while Principal R N Dalvi presented the annual report. Vinayak Angle, Chairman of the school managing committee also spoke. The chief guest MP Adv Narendra Sawaikar gave away the prizes. 


Musical prog in city on Jan 14

PANJIM: Geet Shakun Panjim, is organizing ‘Aamro Amurpiki,’ a programme of selected and popular songs of Uday Bhembre on January 14, at 5.30 pm in Menezes Braganza conference hall, Panjim. Adv Uday Bhembre gave Konkani folklore the song ‘Channyache Raati.’ Singers for the evening are Akshay Naik, Archana Khandeparkar and Shakuntala Bharne who will be accompanied by Vishu Shirodkar (synthesizer), Dhanaraj Madkaikar (harmonium), Yatin Talaulikar (tabla), Prakash Amonkar (side rhythm), Susheel Kumar (rhythm guitar). The programme will be compered by Dr Ajay Vaidya.

Konkani essay contest held

PANJIM: Konkani Kala Kendr, Merxe Gôy, Merces, organized a Romi Konkani essay writing competition on December 19, at Merces Church Parochial hall in two categories - senior and junior (below 15 years). Robert Rodrigues, member of the Association welcome while Sebastiao Fernandes, President gave away the certificates. Aleixo Fernandes, member, proposed the vote of thanks. The prize winners will be awarded on January 16, at 6.30 pm, during the Konkani musical show in memory of the Father of rgw Opinion Poll late Dr Jack de Sequeira at Merces church square. 

Certificate course in Romi Konknni 

PANJIM: Broadway Book Centre, Panjim will conduct a certificate course in Romi Konknni for beginners, from January 19 to February 19, from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm from Monday to Friday, at Broadway Book Centre, Panjim. Speaking, reading and grammatical information will be given importance. Dr (Fr) Pratap Naik, and Jose Salvador Fernandes are the resource personnel. Konkani musical show at Merces 

PANJIM: Konkani Kala Kendr, Merxe, Gôy is organizing a free konkani musical show on January 16, at 6.30 pm near Merces Church, to mark the Opinion Poll Day (Gôycho Osmitai Dis) in memory of the Father of the Opinion Poll Dr Jack de Sequeira. There will be performance by singers of the Konkani stage led by comedian Ambe and his troupe. 

New GSIC office opening

PANJIM: The Chief Minister, Laxmikant Parsekar will inaugurate the new office of Goa State Information Commission at Kamat Towers, 7th floor, Patto Plaza, Panjim, at 10 am on January 12. The Minister for Information and Publicity Milind Naik will also be present. The new office will be start operating from January 12. 

Courses in aquaculture farming

PANJIM: The Directorate of Fisheries will conduct a short-term training courses in aquaculture farming on January 13 and 14, at Fishermen Training Centre at Ela Dhauji, Old Goa. Those interested may submit their applications to the Directorate of Fisheries, Dayanand Bandodkar Marg, Panjim by January 12.
