MARGAO: Stink welcomed SGPDA Chairman Rajan Naik and Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva as they made their presence felt in the wholesale fish market for an inspection on Saturday.
Both Rajan and Caitu expressed their
unhappiness over the pathetic condition of the market. Taking cognizance of the waste, stink and thermocol nuisance during his maiden visit to the market, the SGPDA Chairman promised to issue directions to ensure that the market plays no host to the thermocol waste from August 1. He further said that excess plastic boxes which were found dumped in the market would be removed.
“The Goa government has sanctioned funds to spruce up the wholesale fish market. Work will get underway in the next 4-6 months”, Rajan said.
Meanwhile, a delegation of local fishermen including boat owners, ramponkars and magkars called on the SGPDA chairman and emphasised the need to accord first preference to the local fishermen in the wholesale fish market.
Cutbona Boat Owners Association President Patrick D’Silva told newsmen that the local fishermen have submitted a memorandum to the PDA Chairman to give preference to them over the wholesalers bringing fish from across the borders.
