Goa Nursing Council Bill introduced in assembly

PANJIM: The Goa government has introduced the Goa Nursing Council Bill, 2012 in the legislative assembly on Monday which when passed and assented to by the governor will allow formation of the Goa Nursing Council, a long pending demand of the nurses of Goa.
The council will deal with the registration of nursing personnel as well as regulate nursing education and other connected matters.
Currently nurses in Goa are registered to and regulated by the Maharashtra Nursing Council and have had to travel to Mumbai to get themselves registered, besides also delaying the resolution of issues and problems faced by nurses and Goa.
According to the provisions of the Bill,
the Nursing Council so constituted will have ex-officio members the Dean of Goa Medical College and the Director of Health Services, nominated members to include four head nurses to represented each hospital -- Goa Medical College, Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, MPT Hospital, Government District Hospitals of North and South Goa, Employees State Insurance Hospital to be nominated by the government on rotation, and three nominated members from the government including one public health nurse, one each from auxiliary nurse-midwives and teachers of recognised nursing schools and colleges in the state.
The Elected Members will include one member from amongst the principals of colleges conferring degrees in nursing, one member from among the faculty from colleges conferring degree one member from the faculty of colleges offering diploma in auxiliary nursing and midwifery and one member from the Trained Nurses Association of India (Goa Chapter). The president, vice-president and executive committee members will have to be elected from among themselves for a term of three years.
The council shall also have a registrar and a deputy registrar.
The Goa Nursing Council shall have the powers to act against registered nurses for misconduct after an inquiry and can even withdraw the registration of the nurse. It will also have powers to recognise/derecognize nursing training institutes specify examinations etc. regulate nursing establishments etc.
The council once formed will fulfill a long pending demand of nurses in the state.
