MARGAO: Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva on Friday mooted a proposal before the traders of the Municipal New market for the construction of new market in place of existing congested one.
The Municipal Chairperson made the offer when a delegation of the new market traders Association led by President Vinod
Shirodkar called on the Civic Chief and the Chief Officer J B Bhingui with a charter of demands.
“The time has now come to seriously consider building a new market in place of the existing one. If you agree to the proposal, we can take up the matter with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for committed funds for its construction”, Arthur told the traders.
Association President Vinod Shirodkar maintained that the traders are not opposed to the idea of a new market, but sought commitments from the Civic body and government that they will put the new market in place within a stipulated time frame.
Allaying fears of the traders, the Municipal Chairperson suggested that the traders could be relocated at a temporary place pending construction of the market.
Meanwhile, the delegation demanded to know the fate of the construction of the water tank at the old fish market to ensure dedicated water supply to the fire services in times of emergency. “Most of our demands remain unfulfilled till date. The Civic body should take cognizance of our long pending demands, including a toilet block at the pick-up stand and action against buildings violating parking rules”, Vinod demanded.
Chief Officer J B Bhingui told newsmen that he would call a meeting of various agencies to discuss the demands of the traders.
