Ponda police bust fake currency racket

PONDA: Ponda Police busted a fake currency racket and arrested two persons from Belgaum in the wee hours of Wednesday.
A Ponda police team led by PI Sagar Ekoskar arrested Sachin Vithal Kaloji (26) and Anil Ganpatrao Kowardkar, as they were proceeding from Mollem towards Ponda.
Speaking to reporters, PI Ekoskar said the police was informed that a suspected Karnataka vehicle was proceeding towards Ponda and that, one occupant was suspected to be carrying fake currency notes.
A police team on night patrol intercepted the jeep (KA-31-M-3421) near Sun Inn Hotel at Ponda and nabbed Kaloji. The police recovered cash of Rs 5,550 in denomination of Rs 50 from his possession, which is
suspected to be fake.
Incidentally, Kaloji had filled petrol worth Rs 1,000 in his jeep at a petrol pump in Mollem, while on his way from Belgaum to Ponda, and gave the pump attendant nine notes of Rs 100 and two notes of Rs 50.
The pump attendant on checking the two Rs 50 notes got suspicious and immediately alerted the police.
Police further informed that during the course of investigation, Kaloji informed that he got the notes from Kowardkar to circulate it in the market.
Acting swiftly, PI Ekoskar and his team rushed to Belgaum along with Kaloji and arrested Kowardkar.
Police arrested the accused under Sections 489 (C) and 489 (B) IPC. The duo was remanded to police custody.
and PI Ekoskar is investigating the case under the supervision of Ponda DySP Dhinraj Govenkar.
