Velim gram sabha adjourned over lack of clarity on host of issues

MARGAO: The gram sabha of Velim Panchayat was adjourned on Sunday since members demanded information on a host of subjects, including budget estimates, constitution of the committees, illegal food joints, et al.
It was decided to hold the adjourned meeting of the Panchayat on July 29.
Sunday’s meeting discussed the issue of garbage collection and disposal, besides the cattle pound. Sarpanch Piety Miranda informed that the gram sabha has asked the body to do the follow up on the cattle pound and to work out a mechanism to tackle garbage.
Members raised a host of questions on the budget estimates and demanded answers from the chair. One of
the Panch member was asked by a gram sabha member whether the budget has anything in store for his ward.
Members also demanded a permanent panchayat secretary for the village, saying the panchayat functioning has been hit for want of a permanent secretary.
Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva, who attended the meeting, assured the gram sabha that he would work to get various schemes to the Panchayat.
He asked the Panchayat secretary to guide the newly elected members on the day to day functioning of the panchayats and assured that Velim panchayat would soon get a full-time panchayat secretary.
Gram Sabha member Hector Colaco later told newsmen that the meeting was adjourned since the body had no replies to many queries raised by the members.
Issues that figured at today’s meeting were water problems, garbage issue, non-functioning of street lights, illegal land filing, illegal eateries stray cattle, etc.
