MARGAO/CALANGUTE: Tragedy marred the Sao Joao festivities after two people met a watery grave on Sunday evening.
While a youngster from Kirbhat-Nuvem drowned at Raia-Manora another 52-year-old postman from Saligao drowned in a pond at Don Vaddo, Saligao.
Maina-Curtorim police said the incident at Raia occurred at around
5 pm when 31-year-old Seby Inacio Pereira had gone to Manora to participate in the Sao Joao festivities when he drowned in the waters. Police said that the deceased was pulled out of the waters by other revellers. He was declared dead at the Hospicio hospital.
Police said a case of unnatural death has been registered and investigations are on. His body has been
preserved at the Hospicio mortuary and the post mortem examination is expected on Monday.
Meanwhile, Calangute police have identified the deceased as Peter Mascarenhas from Saligao.
According to police, the deceased along with others were celebrating ‘Sao Joao’ by jumping into the pond at Don Vaddo.
Peter was the nephew of Parish Priest of Saligao church Fr Nascimento Mascarenhas.
News of Peter’s death even reached the Sao Joao celebrations at Siolim where celebrations were stalled to observe a minute’s silence for his departed soul.
Villagers of Saligao rose to pay tributes to Peter’s services and jovial nature.
“Peter could be trusted with his job which he did devotedly for so many years. When we visited Goa he even made it a point to remind us about undelivered letters which he would promptly handover as per our request,” Schubert Vaz said in an online forum Saligao net.
“The whole of Saligao is going to miss Peter's good face and his very dedicated postal service.
He always impressed me with his dedication inspite of being on the temporary staff of the Postal Dept, for so long,” Maxwell Coutinho said from Abu Dhabi.
The funeral will be held today (Monday) at 3.30 pm, at Saligao.
Police said the body has been preserved at GMC Hospital in Bambolim and PSI Laxi Amonkar is investigating the case.
