PANJIM: Rich tributes were paid to veteran freedom fighter, social worker and architect of the Azad Bhavan, late Vishwanath Lawande, on his 14th death anniversary by the V N Lawande Memorial Trust. At the beginning floral tributes were offered by Chairperson of the Trust, Pramila V Lawande, other trustees and freedom fighters. Vishwas Desai in his speech narrated the involvement of Lawande in the freedom struggle. An all-Goa street play competition was organized based on social issues related to Goa on the occasion. Also, a skit competition was organized
for schools on the theme ‘Indian Freedom Struggle’. Pravin Sabnis and Shirish Lawande were the judges for the competitions. Minister for Health Laxmikant Parsekar was the chief guest. He appreciated the selfless work done by Lawande in the freedom struggle as well in the socio-political arena of the State. Environmentalist and social worker Ramesh Gauns was the keynote speaker on the occasion. He stressed on the importance of time management among the youth.
Nandini Sahai heads Goa RTI Forum
PANJIM: Nandini Sahai, Director of International Centre Goa (ICG), took over as the new president of Goa RTI Forum. Sahai, who has been an intrinsic part of the struggle and setting up of the RTI Act, has authored books on the subject. The other office-bearers are: Advocate Rui Fereira, Vice President; Srikant Barve, Secretary; Ganpat Kuttikar, Joint Secretary; Anil Laad, Treasurer; and Christina Peroz, Levil Fernandes, Advocate Shivaji Desai, Devidas Amonkar, Dattaram Desai and Peter Pereira, Members. A meeting of the forum at the ICG decided to have an interactive website of the forum and to prepare a comprehensive database of RTI activists working in the State. Considering the fact that the two-member Goa State Information Commission was headless, the forum passed a resolution demanding that the State government fill both the vacancies. It was also decided to engage educational institutions and the government for introduction of RTI-related topics in school and college curriculum.
New president for Clube Nacional
PANJIM: At a recently held general body meeting, Tony Dias was elected as the President of Clube Nacional, here, for the term 2012-2014, supported by a strong and able executive committee. The other members are: Vice President Francisco Noronha; Secretary Thomas Machado; Treasurer Savio Aquino, Joint Secretary Arleto Campos and members Mario Ursula De Sousa, Domnic Cabral, Tony Fernandes and Aaron Teles. Adv Joseph Vaz is the Chairman and Chetan Dessai is Secretary of the General Assembly.
Curchorem Rotary honours teachers
PANJIM: Rotary Club of Curchorem Sanvordem felicitated local teachers at the Rotary Hall, Curchorem, recently. Educationist Prabhakar Timblo, who was the chief guest felicitated the teachers. The teachers felicitated were Sanjay Talwadker from Holy Cross High School, Quepem, and Antonette D’Souza from Guardian Angel High School, Curchorem, from the secondary section. On the same day, the Inner-wheel Club of Curchorem felicitated Mrs Rege and Mrs Naik Kurke from the primary section. President Raghuvir welcomed the gathering and Ajay Angle thanked.
Kendriya Vidyalaya exams postponed
PANJIM: Kendriya Vidyalaya authorities have decided to postpone the SA-I examinations scheduled for September 20 to September 24 on account of the proposed Bharat bandh. As such, all the Kendriya Vidyalayas in Goa will conduct the SA-I examinations on September 24. All other exams will be held as per schedule.
Mapusa lad tops at State-level declamation competition

Bogmalo beach cleaned-up
PANJIM: The ‘International Coastal Cleanup Day’, the world’s largest one-day voluntary effort to clean up beaches was conducted recently. The clean-up was carried out on the beaches by various hotels and voluntary organizations. The Coast Guard District Headquarters No 11 Goa conducted the event at Bogmalo beach. The Coast Guard, police, school children, local panchayat and hotels joined hands and cleaned the beach by picking up garbage littered around. The Commander Coast Guard, Goa area, DIG SD Bhanot thanked and congratulated all the participants for their whole-hearted efforts in the noble cause. He said that on this day, the beaches around the world are cleaned on volunteer basis in an organized way, to bring awareness among the general populace about the importance of keeping the beaches clean.

PANJIM: Ration cardholders with LPG gas connection can avail of 3 litres of non-subsidized PDS kerosene during on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. All cardholders with LPG gas connections are therefore entitled to draw their SKO quota from their respective retailers. PORVORIM: The newly erected 11KV HT Circuit line from 11KV Housing Board feeder to the newly erected 200 KVA Distribution Transformer centre along with associated equipments for releasing power supply to Housing Board near Pundalik Temple, Porvorim will be test charged on September 24 and will remain charged thereafter. Public is cautioned to stay away from the line and the equipment.
Ganesh preparations in full swing
CANACONA: Preparations for the week-long Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations are in full swing in Canacona.
The entire commercial town at Chaudi is abuzz with people from all directions including Khola, Agonda, Shristhal, Gaondongrim, Cotigao, Poinguinim, Loliem, Polem, Bhatpal, Ordhofond, Sadolzem, Galgibaga, Barcem, Padi, rushing to make purchases for the annual festival since the past week. According to a source, cloth merchants, electrical shops, general provision stores, tailors among others have witnessed high sales during the period. Few shops selling fireworks, artificial flowers/garlands and other decorative items, besides thermacol scenes are heavily visited.
Finding the enormous space crunch surrounding the municipality, special market yard for perishable goods has been opened in the vicinity of KTC bus stand.
and most of the fruits, vegetables and wild fruits required for ‘Matoli’ are being sold from this yard.
Even the weekly Saturday bazaar witnessed unusual rush of people at Chaudi town to make various purchases.
Huge pandals are at Chaudi and Char-Rasta, where lotteries offering cars and two-wheelers as prizes are sold. The entrance at Canacona police station and the PI’s cabin is decked and being decorated to install and worship the Ganesh idol for the next 10 days.
Seminar on the Eucharist
PANJIM: The Jesuit fathers of Pedro Arrupe Institute, Raia, are organising a seminar on ‘Eucharist: The Sacrament of Love’ September 22 and 23 at the institute. On September 22, the seminar will be held from 5 pm to 8 pm, while on September 23 from 9 am to 2 pm. Its major objective is to help participants find deeper meaning in the participation of the Eucharist. Reflection will also be on Eucharistic prayers and the new translation of the English liturgy. Chimbel celebrates Nutritional Week
MERCES: The Chimbel Village Health, Sanitation and Nutrition Committee (VHSNC) in association with Directorate of Health Services celebrated National Nutritional Week at Tremura Community Centre, Indira Nagar. Nutritional officers from DHS Melkiza Furtado, Zhenya D’Lima and Gandhali Umarye spoke on importance of balanced diet to meet the nutritional needs of an individual. A recipe competition was organized wherein 25 participants presented their food items. Bushra Aminbhavi won the first prize, while Laxmi Naidu and Rihana Kittur won the second and third prizes respectively. Three consolation prizes were also awarded. Chimbel SHC staff and VHSNC members were present. Janhavi Mahale welcomed and Jhasi Rani proposed the vote of thanks.
Diana tiatrist of the month
PANJIM: Tiatr Academy of Goa invited Diana for its ‘Artiste of the Month’ programme recently. Diana, well-known in the tiatr circle, was presented a memento on the occasion for her contribution to the Konkani stage for the last 27 years. She got her first break in tiatr at the age of eight to act in the drama late Minguel Rod ‘Open to Close’. She has acted in several village dramas and in tiatrs of well-known directors. The occasion was an emotional one for Diana as she narrated her hard life after the demise of her husband within a short span of their married life. She said she was the first widow to come on the tiatr stage.
