If the moon is sighted on Sunday then Idd will be held on Monday, otherwise Idd will be celebrated on Tuesday. Rajasthan youth drowns
at Dudhsagar
COLLEM: A picnic to the famed Dudhsagar waterfalls ended in tragedy when a youth from Rajasthan drowned in the waterfall. According to Collem police, the victim, Mahipal Bishnoy, a native of Rajasthan but employed at a gas agency in Belgaum, along with seven friends had gone to the Dudhsagar waterfalls on August 15 at about 12.30 pm. Three persons from the group went very close to the waterfalls and Mahipal accidentally slipped and fell into the water. The friends alerted Collem police and a police team searched for the body for four days, before it was finally retrieved on Saturday afternoon.
Two accused of illegal land filling
PORVORIM: Two persons have been accused of illegally filling low-lying land at Angod Mapusa without permission from authorities.
In a police complaint, Sandeep Hadfadkar, deputy manager (GR-I) at North Goa Planning and Development Authority, has accused two business partners based in Mapusa of the illegality.
Belgian held for overstaying
CALANGUTE: A 57-year-old Belgian national was arrested on charges of staying in the country without a valid tourist visa. According to Anjuna police, the accused, Frances Maria Joseph Geebden, presently residing at Vagator, was in possession of a tourist visa which was valid from September 25, 2009 to March 25, 2010. Geebden was arrested by Anjuna police on Friday and was later released on bail after furnishing a surety of Rs 5,000
3 accused of trespassing, damaging property at Morjim
PERNEM: Three persons have been accused of trespassing and damaging property at Morjim, besides threatening the property owner. In a police complaint, Sanjay Korgaonkar of Morjim-Pernem complained that a resident of Taleigao and two others trespassed into his property and damaged garden articles, besides threatening him with threatened him with dire consequences.
Laptops reported stolen from NIT hostel
PONDA: Two laptops worth a combined Rs 80,500 have been reported stolen from the NIT hostel at Farmagudi. In a complaint, Krishnakant Jadhav of Andhra Pradesh told Ponda police that the burglary took place sometime at about 11.30 am on August 17. While one laptop belonged to him, the other was owned by his roommate.
Bhoma-Adcolna sarpanch voted out
PONDA: Bhoma-Adcolna Sarpanch Varsha Naik was voted out of office by 6-1 votes in the seven-member panchayat. It may be recalled that five panchas including the deputy sarpanch had moved a no-confidence motion, alleging that the sarpanch was not taking them into confidence.
Deputy Sarpanch Damodar Naik, Dharma Bhomkar, Sunil Zalmi, Abdul Rehman Khan and Vasant Satarkar were among the five panchas.
Panch Mahima Naik also voted in favour of the no-confidence motion, while outgoing sarpanch Naik voted against the motion.
The date to elect a new sarpanch will be declared by the Ponda Block Development Office.
Scheme for retired seamen in final stages
MARGAO: The Goan Seamen Association of India has said it is only a matter of time before the scheme formulated for retired seamen will the declared by the government in the last week of August. In a press release, GSAI Secretary Benny Da Costa said the file pertaining to the scheme has received all the approvals and was given a final touch by Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar. He said this has been disclosed at a meeting a GSAI delegation had with NRI Commissioner Dr Wilfred Mesquita and Director, NRI U D Kamat. “The delegation visited the NRI office to inquire the status of the scheme as anxious retired seamen and widows made their presence at the GSAI office to know the fate of the scheme”, Benny said.
Children’s film festival in South from Sept 3
MARGAO: The Children’s film festival will be held in South Goa from September 3-7.
District Collector N D Agrawal told newsmen that films will be screened in all the talukas of the district, adding that films will be screened in the theatres and halls where there is no facility of theatres.
He said that Ravindra bhavan, Margao and Curchorem apart from the Quepem sports complex at Quepem and Sanguem will be used as venues to screen the films.
The district Collector has directed the deputy Director of Education to coordinate the festival with the assistance of its Assistant district Education Inspectors in ensuring cent per cent participation of the children and making the festival a great success.
Cong to observe Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary

Shah elected chief of Al-Falah Social Trust
VALPOI: Haroon I Shah was unanimously elected as president of newly formed Al-Falah Social Trust (AFST) Valpoi. Other managing committee members elected are Mohammad Siddiq Aga (vice president), Noor Mohammad Qasmi (general secretary), Shaikh Rajenoor (joint secretary), Sharafat Hussein (treasurer), Imran Khan (joint treasurer) and Sayed Amir, Nadim Shah and Akbar Khan (members).
Al-Falah Social Trust distributed items for preparing Sheer Khurma (sweet dish), rice bags for preparing Biryani and a cash to the needy people in Valpoi and Tisk-Usgao so that the needy people celebrate ‘Eid’ with great enthusiasm.

Restricted water supply to Bardez, Bicholim

Dr Varde’s book release today
PANJIM: On the occasion of the birth anniversary of late Dr Pandurang Sinia Varde, the noted educationist and ex-director of Department of Education, the State Directorate of Art & Culture, will be releasing the second edition of the book ‘History of Education in Goa 1510 to 1975’ authored by late Dr Varde, at Multipurpose hall, Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panjim on August 19, at 5 pm.

Alina inaugurates lifeguard tower at Velsao
PANJIM: Alina Saldanha Minister for Forest and Environment inaugurated a Drishti Lifeguard tower at Velsao beach recently.
There was a mock drill demonstration conducted under the supervision of Mr Negi of Drishti and the lifeguards demonstrated life saving techniques.
Alina Saldanha praised the Drishti organization for the professional expertise in life saving and rescue operations on the beaches of Goa. Later, the Drishti lifeguard tower was inaugurated by Alina Saldanha in the presence of Drishti officials Mr Negi, Dr Marconi Correia, Velsao Sarpanch, Fatima Pereira, Goencho Ramponkaracho Ekvott members Agnelo Rodrigues, Baptist D'Mello shack owners from Velsao Xavier D'souza and Tony Fernandes, Cliff Vaz and other villagers from Velsao Pale and Cansaulim.
