Konkani Day celebrated
MAYEM: President of Konkani Sewa Kendra (KSK) Sanquelim and chief of Konkani division of Government College Sanquelim Prof Sunita Kanekar said the role of Konkani literalist late Shenoi Goembab was pivotal to promote Konkani language in the State.
She was addressing at a Konkani Day celebration programme organised by Konkani Sewa Kendra, Sanquelim in association with Konkani division of Government College, Sanquelim at Borkar Hall, Sanquelim.
KSK Vice President Shyam Fatarpekar, KSK member Kashinath Naik, Samir Prabhu and Rajendra Shetye were present on the occasion.
Drishti screenings at Panjim, Margao
PANJIM: Drishti Special Response Agency will hold screenings for potential candidates between April 24 and 28 at Panjim and Margao.
Vacancies in the next batch of lifeguards are open to both, boys and girls between 18 and 30 years, who are medically fit. They should also be able to swim a distance of 400 metres in 11 minutes. Selected candidates will be provided training at par with international standards. After completing the 6-week intensive training, candidates will be certified by Special Rescue Training Academy (SRTA) accredited to Canada-based International Rescue Instructors Authority (IRIA).
Screenings will be held from 10am to 1pm from 24 to 26 April at the swimming pool at Sports Authority of Goa (SAG), Campal, Panjim and on April 27 and 28 at Sports Authority of Goa (SAG), Fatorda, Margao.

Earth Day celebrations at Goa Science Centre
PANJIM: Goa Science Centre, Miramar will organise various programmes on April 21 and 22 for the students and general public to celebrate the World Earth Day.
On April 21, Nature Trail and Hands on Activities in Science Park will be held at 10.30 am followed by an open house quiz contest for students of Class V to X Standard at 2:30pm and a science film show at 4 pm.
On 22 April, a demonstration cum lecture on ‘Waste Management For A Clean Earth’ by Mr H R Prabhudesai SMS (Agronomy) Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Goa will be held at 10:30am followed by an activity based on crossword puzzle at 12:30pm. Valedictory and prize distribution function will be at 3pm.
GSAMB BoD calls on CM
PANJIM: The newly formed 16-member Board of Directors of Goa State Agricultural Marketing Board headed by Ulhas Asnodkar called on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at his official residence, Altinho- Panjim.
The Chief Minister interacted with the members namely Narayan Velip, Sunil Desai, Narayan Naik, Kishore Shet Mandrekar, Satish Phalgaonkar, Prabhakar Gaonkar, Hemant Katne, Vikas Prabhu,Madhav Sahakari, Ashok Joshi, Ajay Sahakari, Neelesh Prabhu, Ramita Velip, Anil Dessai and Dattaram Joshi.
320 stones removed from patient’s urinary bladder
PANJIM: In an unusual case, Dr Madhav D Sanzgiri via endoscopy removed 320 stones from the urinary bladder of a patient at the Urology Department of NUSI Wockhardt hospital.
A 79-year-old man was admitted with urinary retention due to enlarged prostate and a few bladder stones as per the sonography report.
He underwent a four-hour long endoscopic procedure for removal of stones as well as the prostate.
To the surprise of the team in the operating theatre, 320 stones of various sizes were finally removed.

Centara to open Spa Cenvaree, 3 restaurants in Goa

LLM results announced
PANJIM: Goa University has announced the results of LLM examination which was conducted in January 2012. The next examination is scheduled from June 20. Students are requested to collect the forms from the College office and pay the exam fees immediately, states a press release issued by Dr M Pinheiro, V M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar-Panjim.
Meeting of unaided schools
PANJIM: The Unaided School Association has called a special general body meeting of all unaided schools to discuss the implications of RTE at Sunshine Worldwide School, Bainguinim, Old Goa, on April 20 at 4.30 pm.
The all unaided government recognized primary and secondary schools of Goa, which have formed an association in 2008, have been using the platform to discuss various issues related to betterment of education in the State and have better coordination with the government authorities.
Marathi book Nisarganakshi released
PANJIM: Nisarganakshi, a Marathi book written by Mrs Sujata Damodar Bhatkar was released by Mr Vishnu Wagh, MLA and Chairman of Kala Academy at a function at Damodar Sadan, Verem.

Musical operetta at Margao on April 23
PANJIM: The Pilar Music Academy in association with Daily Bread will stage a special performance of ‘Rau……Khoim Veta?’, a musical operetta on April 23 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao at 7 pm.
Fr Peter Cardozo has provided music to the operetta which is written and directed by Fr Mathew Fernandes.

Woman held on suspicion of being an accomplice
MARGAO: Margao police took into custody a woman on suspicion that she and her accomplice snatched a gold chain from a 4-year old girl at the KTC bus stand on Thursday. The incident occurred when Mary Goes from Sancoale headed to Margao with her granddaughter when she was followed by two ladies in the same bus.
One of the ladies is suspected to have snatched the chain from the neck of the girl when the duo was alighting to catch the bus going to Curtorim. Though the accused woman made good her escape with the chain, people detained the second woman on suspicion that she was her accomplice and handed her over to the police. Margao PI Sudesh Naik said the police have formed a team to investigate the case and appealed to the people to remain alert in crowded place. He said the police are investigating to find out whether the duo was members of any organized gang involved in chain snatching.
Curtorim police register forgery case
MARGAO: Maina Curtorim police have registered a case of forgery for the purpose of cheating against a husband following a complaint lodged by his wife. Margao sub-divisional police officer, DySP Mohan Naik told newsmen that the wife lodged a complaint stating that her husband, who is presently putting up at Dubai, forged her signature to obtain a duplicate key of the joint locker in the city-based nationalized bank and took away the gold ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh. He said the incident occurred when the wife Nalini Fatima Gonsalves was working abroad. Replying to a question, DySP Naik said the husband Josephat Gonsalves approached the bank and claimed that he has lost the key and asked for a duplicate one. “The bank manager agreed to issue a duplicate key on condition he gets the NOC from the wife,” DySP Naik said, and alleged that the husband produced a fake NOC before the manager and removed the gold ornaments from the locker. The Maina Curtorim police are investigating.
Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott elects officer bearers
MARGAO: John Douglas Coutinho was unanimously elected the President of Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott while outgoing President Rui da Silva along with Joe Antao were elected the vice presidents. At the General Body meeting held on April 14, Julio D’Silva was elected as General Secretary for a second term and Ashley Antao was elected as the Joint Secretary while Darwin Cardozo was elected as the Treasurer. The following were elected as managing committee members: Anthony Pereira, Remy Furtado, Alzira Fernandes, Benedito Fernandes, Irene Antao, Tony Dias and Sita Antao. The General Body meeting commenced by observing one minute’s silence as a mark of respect to late Matanhy Saldanha.
Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott has been working in the village panchayat areas of Cavorim-Chandor and Guirdolim and over the years have built up a good rapport with the villagers due to its various projects. In fact, the organization has become synonymous with plastic collection in the two villages and is also approached by the villagers to raise any issue in the gram sabhas as its members have been dominating these proceedings. As the locality of Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott could not be identified, the General Body resolved to include Chandor, Guirdolim, Cavorim below the organisation’s name.
