PANJIM: Hosts Young Strikers Club Benaulim scored a hard fought 2-1 victory over Ambelim SC to enter the quarter-finals of 4th Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup Soccer tournament at St John Baptist, Dando ground, Benaulim.
Benaulim made a slow start following a defensive approach by the rivals. Much against the run of play, medio Lesly Fernandes found Denis Fernandes with a measured pass and the striker made no mistake beating Ambelim keeper Benny D'Silva with a thumping drive.
Ambelim exerted some pressure but Maxwin Fernandes lacked support upfront.
After the change of ends, Benaulim consolidated the position with Denis Fernandes notching his brace following a fine pass from Santan Fernandes.
Ambelim did not lose hope and eight minutes before the final whistle striker Jade Fernandes latched on to a through pass from Diason Cardozo to slot past rival keeper Sugitesh to reduce the margin.
