CLASH OF THE TITANS: The players clash for the ball
in a GFA Kingfisher Pro League football match
between Dempo and Churchill Bros at Nehru Stadium,
Cliffton Gonsalves and substitute Rohan Rickets were the goal getters for Dempo. The win pushed Dempo to 12 points from four matches while Churchill Bros remained on 10 points from six matches.
Having played a scrappy game in their 2-1 victory over Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim, Dempo showed their class and managed to score full points from Monday’s encounter.
Churchill Bros almost took the lead in the 16th minute when midfielder Israel Gurung essayed a fine cross inside the rival penalty box from the right flank but Churchill Bros striker Ajay Singh failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Four minutes later, Churchill Bros had another chance to surge ahead when striker Ajay deceived rival defender Shallum Pires and sent a fine cross to Alesh Sawant who shot wide from close.
Dempo broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Godwin Franco’s free kick was feebly cleared by the rival defender. The lurking midfielder Nickson Castana took advantage of the situation and unleashed a left-footer which Churchill Bros goalkeeper Felix D’Souza fisted away and the rebound was slotted home by Cliffton.
Spurred by the success, Dempo almost doubled the lead through Cliffton, however, Felix came to his side’s rescue and blocked the former’s try off a pass from Joy Ferrao.
Churchill Bros would consider themselves unlucky not to have restored parity in the 33rd minute when Ajay Singh received the ball from Alesh Sawant and the former unleashed a right-footer which brushed the hand of Dempo goalkeeper Tyson and hit the crossbar and Binesh Balan’s shot off the rebound met the same fate.
In the second half the defending champions were a subdued lot as they tried to check their offensive play in an apparent bid to protect their lead. Churchill Bros took advantage of the situation and made a couple of forays into the rival territory. Tyson Caido in the Dempo goal came to his side’s rescue when he thwarted attempts from Ajay and Binesh. In the 70th minute Churchill Bros nearly found the equalizer but Ajay’s rasping shot was well blocked by the Dempo goalkeeper.
Dempo doubled their lead when substitute Rohan headed home off a Godwin Franco cross at the fag end.
