Jalmi, Vernekar excel in AICSBT

PANJIM, MARCH 6 – Kashinath Jalmi and Satish Vernekar performed well both in the Veterans and Men’s Double events in All India Civil Badminton 2007-08 at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala tournament held recently. In the Veteran event, K Jalmi and S Vernekar lost to L Kumarand RKV Singh (Manipur) in the quarterfinals 18-21, 14-21. In the single event, Veterans’ first round Tukaram Kalangutkar (Goa) defeated C M Parab (MBI) 21-8, 2-19 but lost in second round to Dr R N Sarkar (UP) 14-21, 9-21 while in the Men’s Doubles, K Jalmi and S Vernekar entered pre-quarterfinal defeating Balaram Shuklam and Vidyadhar Dubey (CHHG) in the first round 21-16, 21-14 but lost in the pre-quarter final to K Nagaraju and Naveen (AP) 16-21, 15-21. Salkar also moved it to the quarter-final defeating in firstround Shailendar Gaur and Sunil Kumar (Hayana) 21-18, 21-16 and in the second round defeated to Anil Bhardwaj and Maheshchand Sharma (Rajasthan) by 21-13, 21-8 but lost in quarter final to Vivek Sharma and Ashish Sharma (Faridabad) by 8-21, 11-21. While in the Men’s Singles, Patrick Gonsalves who was given bye in the first round, defeated Dr Harendra Prasad (Bihar) 21-10, 21-11 in the second round but lost in the pre-quarter final to Kamran Ahmed (Kerala) 9-21, 10-21. In the Women’s Open event, Marina Albuquerque reached pre-quarter final defeating Punitha Jayachandran (CHRSB) 21-12, 21-14 but lost in the second round to Rohini Ayawar (Maharashtra) 11-21, 13-21.
