MARGAO: Navelim Sporting Club defeated Nuvem Sports Club 2-1 to cruise into the quarter-finals of all-Goa 16th Benaulim Villagers inter-village football tournament organised by Dando Boys Club, Benaulim at St. John Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, Thursday. There was no score at half time.
Navelim had a golden opportunity to surge ahead but Sanford Cardozo shot wide with only the rival goalkeeper at his mercy. Yet another chance went down the drain when Alvito Colaco failed to convert from close.
After the break, Navelim put up a better performance and created many forays into the rival territory. Their persistent forays paid dividends in the 55th minute when striker Sanford
punished the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot after he was fed by Alvito.
Spurred by the lead, Navelim exerted additional pressure on the rival citadel and launched a barrage of attacks. Navelim doubled the lead when Rowel Gomes slotted past the rival goalkeeper off a pass from Sanford.
Stung by the setback, Nuvem regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp. Savio Colaco beat the rival goalkeeper with a rasping shot off a pass from Joe Colaco to reduce the deficit.
After reducing the margin, Nuvem went all-out in search of the equaliser but failed to get past the rival defence.
