MARGAO: Sangolda Lightning prevailed over Navelim Villagers Union 7-5 via the tie-breaker to storm into the quarter-finals of all-Goa Our Lady of Merces inter-village football tournament organised
by SIrlim Sports Club at church ground, Chinchinim, Saturday. The score was 3-3 at full time.
Navelim took the lead in the 14th minute when striker Sanford Cardozo bulged the net. However, their joy was short lived when Llyod Mascarenhas neutralised the lead after he picked up the ball from his colleague and punished the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Spurred by the equaliser, Sangolda piled on the pressure and harassed the rival defender with well orchestrated raids and were rewarded when Xavier Luis punted the ball to the far corner of the net.
Crossing over, Navelim were the dominant lot with their forwards raiding the rival goal time umpteen times. Their efforts materialised when striker Sukhdev Arwade bulged the net from close. Navelim took the lead through striker Alvito Colaco.
With time running out, Sangolda scored the equaliser through Sachin Chopdekar late in the second half.
In the tie-breaker, Washington Pereira, Llyod Mascarenhas, Thomas Alvares and Sachin Chopdekar were on target for Sangolda while Alvito Colaco and Sony Colaco converted for Navelim.
