Sankwadi clinch Arpora inter-ward title

CALANGUTE: Sankwadi squeezed past Rauta Vaddo 4-2 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions of Arpora inter-ward football tournament organised by Mainath Bhatti Boys
at St. Joseph’s School ground, Arpora, Saturday. No goals were scored at full time.

Rauta enjoyed a slight edge initially and could have taken the lead in the 10th minute but Domnic failed to convert.
After the scare, Sankwadi got their act together and raided the Rauta defence time and again but rival goalkeeper Jude kept their forwards at bay. A Siddesh try was neatly gathered by goalkeeper Jude in the 20th minute.
Rauta’s Domnic was again in the thick of action but he failed to get past the rival goalkeeper after dribbling past a couple of defenders in the 25th minute. Saprem of Sankwadi had a golden opportunity to give his side the lead in the 28th minute but he failed to judge the ball in the waterlogged area.
Changing ends, Rauta exerted pressure on the Sankwadi defence but their forwards failed to find the net.
Sankwadi almost forged ahead but a Milind header hit the crossbar and went out of play after Kalpesh had done the spadework in the 38th minute.
Rauta goalkeeper Jude stole the limelight by pulling off a couple of superlative saves to keep his slate clean.
In the tie-breaker, Kalpesh, Haresh, Saprem and Gautam converted for Sankwadi while Vasudev and Yatish were on target for Rauta.
Michael Lobo, Calangute MLA and NGPDA Chairman was the chief guest for the final while Fr. Simao Rodrigues parish priest of Holy Trinity Church, Nagoa-Arpora-Baga was the guest of honour. Sushma Nagvekar, Joseph Fernandes, Samir Naik (Khoda), Agostinho D’Souza, Roshan Redkar and members of Mainath Bhatti Boys were also present.
Bonnie Rodrigues compered and proposed the vote of thanks.
