PANJIM: Calangute Association scored a hard fought 6-5 win over Candolim Sports Club vie the tie-breaker to move into the quarter-finals of the 11th London Trophy 2017 organised by Goa Velha Sports Club at Goa Velha Sports Club ground, on Monday.
Calangute Association took an early lead through Amol Salgaocar who headed home off a free kick taken by Pedro Gonsalves beating Krupesh Bandodkar in the Candolim goal. At the other end, Canute D’Souza put Nehal Naik through but Nehal failed to convert. Amol had a chance to score his brace and double the lead but he shot over the rival keeper and failed to find the nets.
At half time, Calangute Association led by a solitary goal. Post resumption, Canute got the equaliser for Candolim SC after he received a pass from Janifer Clement and dribbled past the rival defenders before placing the ball into the goal beating Selwyn D'Souza in the Calangute goal. Deepraj Sangelkar nearly doubled the lead for Candolim SC but his long range effort missed the target by a whisker.
At the other end, Aniket Mandrekar missed to convert off a Blake Haldankar through pass. Rajkumar Naik nearly sealed victory for Calangute Association but was unlucky as his power-packed effort hit the upright before going out of play. At the end of regulation time, both teams settled for a 1-1 draw.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Calangute scored through Pedro Gonsalves, Rajkumar Naik, Joaquim Gonsalves, Aniket Mandrekar, and Amol Salgaocar while Candolim SC netted with the efforts of Siddharth Shirodkar, Aniket Agarwadekar, Akash Banavalikar, and Nikhil Naik.
