DULER: Football Club Bardez Goa silenced their critics as they blanked Calangute Association by a remarkable 3-0 win to clinch trophy the Goa Police Cup organized by Goa Police Sports Cell in association with Vasco Sports Club and GFA, sponsored by Axis Bank, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Friday.
This season’s new entrants FC Bardez stunned the Goan football fraternity as they tasted sweet success in their very first competitive tournament, proving that they mean business and are not a club to be taken lightly.
The stadium was literally overflowing with spectators that had gathered in large number to boost the morale of their teams.
Both the sides proved equal to the task wherein Calangute had their first say at the goal in the 9th minute of play as Agnelo Colaco sent a low cross across the face of the FC Bardez goal but Olan Chandran was a wee bit late in getting his feet to the ball.
A minute later Steven Fernandes neatly set up Agnelo Colaco who was timely dispossessed by Bardez keeper Mirshad K.
After some midfield action Bardez managed to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute of play when Calangute’s Stanley D’Silva’s error in the last line of defence proved to be too costly, as Kirtikesh Gadekar pounced on the opportunity and fired the ball home.
Thereafter Bardez initiated several vicious moves but Alesh Sawant and Peter Carvalho missed the target narrowly.
Calangute had themselves to blame for the loss, as three minute after the lemon break, their defence along with the keeper failed to judge the flight of Rowilson Rodrigues floater into the danger zone, where Myron Mendes on getting hold of the ball drilled it into the far corner of the Calangute nets to double the lead.
Minutes later Girish Naik’s low shot landed into the Calangute’s side netting and then Calangute keeper Jason did well to thwart Latesh Mandrekar from scoring.
Calangute should have reduced the margin in the 63rd minute of play when substitute Valerio Rodrigues got hold of Rowilson Rodrigues backpass, but keeper Mirshad K came off his line to deny the striker from scoring.
While their strikers initiated attacks, it was their defense that let them down again when Alesh Sawant got the better of defender Melvin Lobo and sent the ball to unmarked Serino Fernandes who made no mistake to tap it home, 3-0.
Deputy chief minister of Goa Francis D’Souza handed over the prizes sponsored by Axis Bank.
Player of the tournament was awarded to Alesh Sawant (FC Bardez), winners were rewarded with Rs 2,00,000 plus trophy while runners-up had to content with Rs 1,00,000 plus trophy.
