VASCO, SEPT 13
Faria Strikers created a big upset when they beat Churchill Bros 2-1 in a GFA Kingfisher Pro League match at Tilak Maidan, here on Monday. They led 1-0 at the break
Earlier, soccer fans might have not taken debutant Faria Strikers seriously, when they scored two quick goals against Salgaocar in their opening encounter, which they eventually lost 4-2, after strong comeback from Salgaocar.
But with today’s win over Churchill Brothers it would certainly force the teams to take a note that Faria mean serious business.
In an interesting encounter Faria scored a gem of a goal in injury time of second half to claim full three points.
Faria led at the breather with a solitary goal from striker Succour Fernandes, while Durga Boro reduced the margin for Churchill in the second half. Substitute Agnelo Quadros scored the match-winner in injury time.
Faria were the dominating side and struck the opener in the 26th minute. Milton Gomes sent the ball from the right flank to striker Succour Fernandes in the box, who struck it beautifully.
Earlier, Churchill had initiated a couple of moves through Brian Mascarenhas, Durgao Boro and Sabino Rodrigues but they were off the target.
Barely two minutes after change of ends, Churchill equalised when substitute Royston Pereira served Durga Boro on a platter and the latter made no mistake with it.
Boro gave a torrid time to Faria with constant threats, but a goal eluded Churchill.
Faria came up with the precious match-winner off the boots of substitute Agnelo Quadros in injury time. A free kick off skipper David Lalrinmuana rebounded to Mahadev Telwar who in turn crossed it to Agnelo who did the rest.
