PANJIM: Carnival committees across the State have insisted on a 25 per cent hike in funding from the State tourism department for hosting parades and programmes during Carnival 2014.
According to inputs received from Wednesday’s meeting, Carnival committees of municipal councils have urged the tourism department to consider granting between Rs 20 and Rs 30 lakh and consider hike in prize money from Rs 3.75 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per town which would facilitate higher participation of floats and improve quality as well.
The initial proposal to sanction Rs 3.75 lakh per town was opposed by the municipal council carnival committees during the meeting held Wednesday.
Officials in the tourism department disclosed that the fresh appeal for enhancement of money will be taken up in the next meeting and all views put forward by the committees will be considered.
Meanwhile the tourism department has finalized plans for carnival celebrations at seven centers which include Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Vasco, Ponda, Shiroda and Curchorem.
While the event management agency appointed for Carnival 2014, Vinsan Graphics, made its presentation Wednesday, the Corporation of the City of Panaji is also learnt to have put forward its presentation before the State level Carnival Committee.
“We have presented our plan for Carnival in Panjim,” Mayor Surendra Furtado said, adding that the CCP was confident that its plan would be executed.
Furtado, however, said that with little time left for organizing Carnival its initial plan for bringing a Brazilian troupe may be dropped.
Officials from the tourism department disclosed that the CCP has been urged to partner with the tourism department in conducting the carnival festivities in the State capital and several of its concepts have been welcomed by the department.
Vinsan Graphics in its presentation has also unveiled its plans for executing the carnival celebrations in the State. Plans are on to organize the King Momo contest and entries for this would be invited from all municipal committees. The agency proposes to have street musicians during the four-day festivities in Panjim, in addition to bringing artists namely Rabbi Shergill, Kailash Kher, Sona Mahapatra, Raghu Dixit and renowned band Agnee during the Food and Cultural festival.
The tourism department is also proposing to hold road shows to promote Carnival 2014 in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.
Meanwhile, the tourism department will also be hosting the food festival from February 28-March 4.
Four venues have been shortlisted which include Miramar beach, Lusofonia ground at Bambolim, Merces ground and Campal ground.
“Going by the huge response for stalls it is likely to be held at Merces grounds,” said a source close to Herald.
The tourism department is expecting to draw 2.5 lakh tourists to the State for Carnival 2014 with footfalls of around 50,000 a day at the food festival. The
