We live in an uncertain world. When we leave home in the morning, we assume we will return in the evening. When we say goodbye to loved ones, we take it for granted we will see them again. We presume they know we love them, so maybe we don’t say the words as often as we should. Unfortunately, we fail to consider the mortal reality that this may not be the case, until it’s too late. Tomorrow does not always come. Someone once said that “life is short, so keep short accounts with God”. That is wise advice, but I’d like to add that we should also keep short accounts with every person who is in the circle of our lives. We never know when life will dramatically change, sometimes permanently.
Many a times we fight over petty things which have no significance at all. Nevertheless, we fight to prove others wrong. We do not see to the feelings of others as we are too engrossed only thinking about ourselves. This reminds me of an incident which I would like to share. A father of twin daughters Maya and Chaya heard the twins arguing in their room and asked them as to what’s wrong. Maya said that Chaya has taken her doggie. The father groans and tells Chaya to give it back to Maya knowing that they both had only one stuffed dog.
However, within minutes the argument started again, and the father called out to them from his room and asked them what’s wrong again. Now Chaya yells and tells her father that Maya has taken her doggie. So, this exchange went on for a few more times and the father got a little irritated with the kids and decided to go to see what is actually happening in his kids room.
On entering the room, he tells them that if they are going to fight the whole time, then he is going to take the doggie from them. But to his utter surprise, he realized that the twins did not have doggie with them. So he asked them where the doggie that they were fighting for is and in total silence the twins looked at their father. Both Chaya and Maya tell their father innocently that it was an imaginary doggie that they were fighting all this while!!!!
The father was flabbergasted and speechless as he noticed that his twins were fighting over nothing but a make-believe doggie. He quickly tells them to pretend that there are two doggies and goes back to his room feeling highly amused.
We too behave in this manner and argue over trivial matters.
