Rs 38.57 lakh in revenue 

PANJIM: The office of the Mamlatdar of Tiswadi Madhu Narvekar has recovered revenue to the tune of Rs 38.57 lakh between July 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 information sourced from his office has revealed. 

The revenue has been generated through disposal of recovery cases, 282 of which have been disposed. 

During the same period, the mamlatdar issued 4560 residence certificates, 380 divergence certificates, 20 income certificates, attested 5453 affidavits and 13,000 certificates, issued 282 new ration cards, 829 inclusion of name on ration card, correction of name on ration card, 90 duplicate ration cards and 930 mutation certificates.

Velim local dies in accident

MARGAO:  A 30-year-0ld man from Baradi, Velim, lost life in a tragic accident when the Karishma motorcycle he was riding went off the road and fell in a roadside drain.

According to Cuncolim police Rupesh Kuntekar was on his way home on his Karishma bike GA-09-F-8929 on Wednesday at 10.30 pm and when he reached Baradi, he lost control of the bike and fell in roadside drain. Kuntekar was thrown off the bike and suffered serious head injuries and succumbed to the same. PSI Tukaram Chavan is investigating.

Scooter engine stolen

MARGAO: Unknown accused culprits committed theft of a Honda Aviator scooter engine, worth Rs 35,000, which was kept in an open space at Nalanda Aparments, Rawalfond, Margao. A complaint has been filed by Vincent Joao M D’Costa, a resident of Sanguem, stating that he had parked his scooter in an open place at Nalanda Aparments on January 29 and that when he returned the next day, on January 30, he found its engine missing. Offence of theft under section 379 IPC has been registered and further investigation is in progress.

Cess on non-bio packaging material

PANJIM: The government has levied a cess of two per cent on non-biodegradable packaging material, a notification issued here by the department of science and technology Thursday said.

The products mentioned are polyethylene (PE), polyester, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polystyrene (styrofoam/thermocol), polyvinyl chloride, acrylic, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, nylon, rayon, lexan, dacron, acetall, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, carbon fibre, fibre glass, kevlar and foams including hard or toughened foam.

SGJA elections on February 22

MARGAO: The elections to elect a new committee for the South Goa Journalists Association (SGJA) will be held on February 22, from 2 pm to 5 pm at the MMC press room.

A press release issued by SGJA working committee has informed that the elections will be held for post of president, vice-president (2 posts), secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, assistant treasurer, organising secretary and five executive committee members.

Nomination papers will be accepted from February 12 to 18 while the scrutiny will be conducted on February 19. The last date for withdrawal is February 20 and the polls will be held on February 22.

Sanquelim PHC to be upgraded 

BICHOLIM: Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant on Thursday stated that the Sanquelim Primary Health Centre (PHC) will soon be upgraded to the Community Health Centre.

Speaking exclusively to Herald, Dr Sawant said he is working hard to get the approval and upgrade the Sanquelim PHC to Community Health Centre.

“Since the Sanquelim PHC was inaugurated on January 23, 2013, I have been trying to follow-up the issue and I hope to upgrade the Sanquelim PHC in the next 15 days. My efforts are to get the sanctions before the election code of conduct comes into effect,” Dr Sawant told Herald.

“After the upgradation, the hospital will have better facilities including a gynaecologist. The people will not have to run to GMC Hospital at Bambolim for minor issues,” added Dr Sawant.

Ambaulim local dies in mishap

CURCHOREM: A 60-year-old resident of Ambaulim-Kavatemwada, Quepem, died in a road accident near Sati Temple, Ambaulim. According to Quepem Police, a motorcycle (GA-09-C-4074) was proceeding from Balli towards Quepem when it dashed against an oncoming scooter (GA-09-J-6607) at Ambaulim on Tuesday. Police said the rider of the scooter, Ramdas Kudalkar, sustained grievous injuries and succumbed to injuries on the spot. ASI C L Rane is investigating the case.

Workshop on gardening 

PANJIM: Ashok Dande, a veteran in landscape gardening and horticulture will conduct a two-day workshop on ABC of gardening at his aesthetically laid out gardens at Nagali, Taleigao on February 15 and and 16, from 10 am to 1 pm and 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. This is a unique opportunity for plant lovers to acquire in-depth knowledge of life of plants, kitchen gardens, followed by hands on practice and interactive sessions.
