The mining imbroglio continues as Centre, State and Mine Owners failed to reach any consensus. While the Centre is firm on its decision that the State government should initiate a process to e-auction the mining leases, the State is exploring options of setting up a Mining Corporation or a legislative cure. The mine owners are also of the strong view that a legislative cure, thereby allowing them to operate the mines till 2037, be adopted to resume iron ore activities in Goa. After speaking to experts in the field, SHWETA KAMAT lists out in detail how these three options will work for the State mining industry

The NEVER-ENDING WOES of Mopa farmers

Even as several farmers are still fighting for their compensation for the land acquisition of Mopa airport, the State government has mooted another plan of acquiring huge tracts of land (5.25 lakh sq metre) for the Expressway connecting the NH17 to the airport. The Central government has recently granted National Highway (NH) status to the project. While the State is upbeat about saving the costs of the Expressway, hundreds of farmers are left wondering about their future due to another land acquisition.
