PANJIM: The Department of Tourism on Friday took possession of the Mandovi Riviera and sealed the prime premises on the banks of Mandovi river, Panjim.

According to the Department of Tourism, the restaurant and surrounding area was leased to a local firm 27 years ago and renewed after every nine years. However, the department served a notice to the lease holder asking him to vacate the premises due to pending dues of amounting to approximately Rs 19 lakh.

However, the lease holder challenged the order of the Director of Tourism claiming that he was not the competent authority. Finally, the Tiswadi Deputy Collector issued an order in favour of the department following which a team of officials from the department visited the site and took possession of the restaurant and surrounding space after sealing it.
