The 42nd State Art Exhibition is here and the art
world is buzzing with excitement. One of
the most anticipated competitions in the art world. It is a huge motivational
boost for young and upcoming artists who want to display their creativity on
the state level. Kala Academy Goa annually organises the State Art Exhibition,
which is open to three categories: painting and graphic prints, applied art and
sculpture. Three awards of Rs 20,000 each will be presented for the three
categories.
“Kala Academy celebrates all branches of
visual as well as performing arts. For arts students, there is a Student’s Art
Exhibition and for school students, we organise an annual regional and state
level drawing competition. At the State Art Exhibition, we notice a lot of
shining artists who make their first attempt in the art world. There is a lot
of substance in their ideas and execution and all this is visible through their
artwork,” says Pradeep Gaonkar, Programme Executive, Kala Academy Goa. The
competition is open to all artists who are in Goa for minimum three years and
even those who are from Goa and residing elsewhere in India. One artist can
participate in more than one section, but separate entry fees should be paid
for each section.
Painting and graphic prints include drawings and paintings with
mediums like oil, water colours, inks, crayons or mix media collage and graphic
prints. Applied art consists of graphic design of visual communication,
original or printed work in applied art and creative photography. Sculpture
category consists of work in stone, terra-cotta, metal, wood, marble, plastic
and fibre glass, etc. However, works of clay, glass and other easily breakable
material are not accepted.
A panel of three judges is appointed by Kala Academy for
selection of the exhibits and awards and they have the right to withhold any of
the awards if the exhibits are not up to the required standard. Every exhibit
that will be selected for display and an award will be purely on merit basis.
“We invite three national level artists for the three categories
for the selection and then the judging of the selected artwork for the awards.
They also check the authenticity of the work,” says Pradeep.
The painting and graphic print should be maximum 4 feet vertical
or horizontal, for applied art and graphic design, it should be maximum 30 inch
and sculpture should be medium size suitable to handle and movement. The
exhibits should be collected within seven days after the exhibition is over.
During the award ceremony, every year, Kala Academy invites a
noted artist as a guest lecturer. Last year, Mahendra Damle, Art Expert and
Principal of Rachana Sansad College, Mumbai, delivered a lecture on the topic
‘Creative Process, Art Thinking and Visual Language’. “We announce the guest
lecturer a few days before the exhibition and they provide slide shows and
their works to inform budding artists about art. The awards too are presented
for each category and as it is a national level competition, there is no first
place or third place award but all are winners,” concludes Pradeep.
