CELEBRATING 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TELESCOPE

The Association of Friends of Astronomy, Goa, in collaboration with The Goa Science Center, is organising a host of activities to celebrate 400th anniversary of the telescope. Café has the details
After
the telescope was invented in Italy by Galileo, in
1609, the first pair of telescopes to
India were brought to Goa by a Jesuit priest, Fr Kirwitzer, in 1618. On the
night of November 11, 1618, the first telescopic observation on Indian soil was
carried at Rachol and Diwar. It is on record that comets too were discovered in
Goa by these astronomers through their detailed observations. To commemorate
this great anniversary in the history of Science, a state-wide program is being
launched by The Association of Friends of Astronomy, Goa in collaboration with
The Goa Science Center.
An Archeo astronomy trek to understand the Jesuit astronomy of
Old Goa will be conducted by AFA President, Satish Nayak at 10:30am at the
World Heritage Precinct, Old Goa, on November 11, 2018. It will be followed by
an event at The Goa Science Center, Miramar, where RCKapoor, former Professor,
Indian Institute of Astrophysics, will be talking on ‘400 years of telescope in
India’ at 2:30pm.
On November 12, a talk on The Pole Star and basic sky
observation will be conducted at 6:30pm at Vidyaprabodhini High School,
Porvorim.
On November 13, at 7pm, an astronomy film screening will be held
at The Public Astronomical Observatory, Junta House, Panjim.
On November 14, the reopening functions of the Panjim
Observatory for the winter season will be held at Junta House and the Margao
Observatory reopening will be held at Ravindra Bhavan,Margao, both at 7pm.
On November 15, an open air Beach Astro Quiz and sky observation
program will be held at Miramar and Colva beaches, both at 7pm
On November 16, a talk and Sky Observation will be held at
Saraswat Vidyalaya, Khorlim, Mapusa.
On November 17, Beach Astronomy sessions are being held at
Calangute Beach and Baina Beach, Vasco both at 7pm.
On November 18, The closing program will be held at Ravindra
Bhavan terrace, Baina, Vasco with a film screening and a sky observation.
