Creating environmental sustainability and building awareness through the arts

A special project done

jointly by the Serendipity Arts Festival and Hanif Kureshi from the St+art India Foundation along with the Corporation of the City of Panaji and Stir Creativity, is looking at creating environmental sustainability and building awareness through the arts. Stir Creativity is Bombay Sapphire’s platform created towards their endeavor to inspire and encourage people to engage with creativity and unlock their creative potential. The artistic activation has been done at the Dona Paula sorting station in Panaji. Goa is one of the few states in India that recycles its 80% waste with a strong model created for waste management and sustainability.

Talking about this initiative, Mr. Sanjit Rodrigues, Commissioner, Corporation of the City of Panaji, said, “The Arts is an integral part of the fabric in the culture and ethos of Goa, especially so in the City of Panaji. The Government of Goa is constantly looking for opportunities to expand the role that Arts and culture can play in making our community more cohesive and vibrant. One of the most important ways we do this is through critical collaborations with cultural organizations like Serendipity Arts Festival. The collaboration has been strategized and executed to highlight the idea of Stir Creativity by bringing together art and sustainability.” He added, “Having vibrant street art on our community waste sorting centres is with an aim to not only draw the community to segregate their waste and care for their city but also create the chic to instill pride in our workers and take ownership of the place they work in. Our sorting stations will soon be the most sought after selfie points in the city.”

Engaging with people through the arts, the project seeks to tap into the creative spirit of every individual, and will aim to inspire through street art murals. The Festival, in its earlier editions has done numerous community based projects in and around Panaji to create awareness around environmental sustainability, like the eco-walks and public activations to preserve water bodies and creeks with the help of local communities.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal, Founder Patron, Serendipity Arts Foundation said: “Our collaboration with Stir Creativity and the Goa Government is part of our mission to create a positive social impact and build sustainability through the arts. We have regularly used the arts as a medium to activate many such sites across Panjim and Goa to sensitize the community about environmental sustainability; this theme, in fact, is strongly emphasized in our Festival projects’.

This particular artwork, titled Goa Glitch, is a tribute to the fractals of joy, adventure, free spiritedness, endless coastlines and the expansive blue skies of Goa. Using different hues of blue the artist attempts to convey the relaxed nature of the land, the boundless vigor of its people, and Goa’s innate quality of inspiration that stirs up creativity and freedom of self-expression.

Commenting on the collaboration, Aastha Gupta, Brand Manager – Premium White Spirits (India & South East Asia), Bacardi India Private Ltd., said “We are absolutely thrilled about our collaboration with

Serendipity Arts Festival for the murals. Creativity and sustainability are the core pillars of Bombay Sapphire and this association perfectly blends the two together in what we hope will be an inspiring creative journey for everyone who sees the murals. The goal of Stir Creativity is to reawaken creativity amongst as many people as possible as we sincerely believe that you don’t have to be an artist to be creative.”

The artwork is executed in a manner of an assemblage of these ideas and emotions in an innovative manner, delivering the surreal experience that Goa is all about. The integration of the art work would be done through a formal unveiling ceremony, followed by a walk though of the artworks.
