There are many social issues that are currently plaguing Goa and social media is being instrumental in bringing them to the fore. One initiative that combines entertainment with social awareness is the Cut It! short film competition wherein issues like garbage, wastage of food, beef ban, female foeticide, child labour, rape, depression, alcoholism, eve teasing and extramarital affairs, have been made into two-minute short films in Konkani by 32 parish youth groups from across Goa. Cut It! is one of the events of Monsoon Blast. Kevin Fernandes, a member of the organising committee of St Rita’s Parish Youth Association, Maina, explains the concept: “Monsoon Blast 2017 will feature enthralling sports, cultural, creative and adventurous events, with 32 youth groups battling it out for the coveted trophy. The event will attract thousands of youngsters to participate in various competitions like Tackle Snatch Dribble, 5-aside football, The Final Quest, a treasure hunt, Ring Of Honour, sumo wrestling, Tenacious Tussle, Tug of war, Art Beat, a graffiti competition, Make your Move, foot pool, Take a Shot, penalty shootout, Sliding Tackle, Play station 4: FIFA 17 and the Shout Out Loud slogan competition.” The Cut it! competition has garnered the most attention. The various participating parish youth associations had to prepare their videos in advance and completely execute it for most likes and shares. The videos have already been uploaded on Facebook on the Monsoon Blast page, open to likes and shares, which is one of the criteria for the judging. “The counting of likes and shares will close at 12am on September 24, 2017. The judging criterion is 50 per cent for the content, 30 per cent for the shares and 20 per cent for the likes. The concept will be judged on concept of the entire video, script, direction, acting and editing. The shares will be calculated as 30 marks for 5,000 and above shares, 25 marks for 4,000 and less than 5,000 shares, 20 marks for 3000 to less than 4,000 shares and then 5 marks drops for every thousand shares, less than 500 shares receives 3 marks only. For likes, 2,000 and above likes will receive 20 marks, 1,500 to less than 2,000 will receive 15 marks, 1,000 to 1,500 likes will get 10 marks, 500 and less than 1,000 likes will receive 5 marks and less than 500 likes will get 3 marks,” says Kevin. Monsoon Blast was presented by different youth members of St Rita’s Parish Youth Association, Maina, in the year 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015. Keeping up with the times, the association thought of introducing Cut It!. The invites for the competitions were sent out to nearly 70 parishes and the first 32 to register were considered for the competition. Besides the competition, traditional food prepared by the local villagers will be another exquisite feature of the event.
