Moulding Goa into an eco-friendly paradise
Eco Champions for Goa is a social activation platform established six months ago to connect people who are building a sustainable eco system in Goa. One such example, is Ecoposro, Goa’s first zero waste store, who have succeeded in bringing a change in the trend of grocery shopping. Café takes a deeper look at the Eco Champions success and how the Ecoposro initiative by Jonah Fernandes and Eldridge Lobo inspired many.
Eco Champions for Goa is a social activation platform established six months ago to connect people who are building a sustainable eco system in Goa. The organization narrates the story of an individual or a cause that is making a difference in preserving the ecology of Goa. These stories are told through the medium of short three minute films.
Goa has numerous social and ecological initiatives by people, yet working zealously they never get a chance to reach out to the rest of the state amidst the busy life and populated crowd. In early 2018, a few like-minded individuals came together to become the voice of these ‘little heard but truly inspiring’ stories of people through the social media. Today, the organization tells one story a month that raises numerous queries about the cause. This has interested many volunteers connecting with the causes.
“All the champions we have featured so far have presented us with ideas and solutions that work. We are absolutely excited about being the bridge between causes and the people supporting them”, describes Marc Francis, a member of the Eco Champions of Goa organization.
Over the last few months, Eco Champions of Goa has featured inspiring people, one of them being Goa’s first Zero waste store- Ecoposro.
This venture has been the dream of two friends from Siolim, Jonah Fernandes and Eldridge Lobo. While on one hand they loved Goa for its scenic beauty and environmental wonders, on the other hand, they couldn’t bear the sight of garbage especially plastic lying around with unplanned waste management system, which only adds to the growing pollution levels in the state.
Not the type who would only sit and complain about the prevailing system, they decided to do something about it. They started organizing clean-up drives in Morjim and some of their favorite spots around their town, Siolim, and also decided to individually adopt a zero-waste lifestyle. They began introducing more people into their green realm which led them to start the Ecoposro store, Goa’s first zero-waste all-purpose store.
What makes the Ecoposro store unique?
‘Posro’ is a Konkani word denoting ‘a small local shop’. A lot of people came from around the state to favorably shop everything under one roof, without plastic and other wasteful packaging.
Basically, Jonah and Eldridge crafted the idea of Ecoposro where they obtain the raw materials bringing them to the shop in gunny bags, jute sacks and reusable tin containers and delivering them to the customers. They orderly arrange the products on the shelves in beautiful glass jars and coconut bowls.
While purchasing the products, the consumers bring their own shopping bags to carry the items, and if not, a recyclable glass jar or paper pack is offered. These two heroes synchronize with farmers, vendors and also connect with bunch of people trying to encourage them with a no-plastic-Goa.
The frequent customers and rare visitors are all quite happy when they step into Ecoposro as it gives them nature vibes. Ecoposro concept is not only helpful, but store items are also creatively designed and placed so that it attracts more people to be eco-friendly purchasing organic eco products (like household essentials, food products, toiletry, cosmetics, stationery and basic requirements) from Ecoposro.
Jonah and Eldridge have given Goa a chance to return to its paradise with the Ecoposro initiative, and they truly adhere the term Eco- Champions of Goa by the Eco Champions of Goa organization. Eco Champions of Goa, will soon feature many more that will contribute to the paradise of Goa.
