The textbook by Dr. Bernadette D’Souza

[MA (English) MEd PhD (Education)], entitled ‘The Power of Dramatic Activities in the Teaching of English as a Second Language’ fulfils the long-felt need of secondary/ higher secondary teachers of English as a second language and teachers of other subjects like History, Geography, etc for a powerful reference book, a ready reckoner of sorts, that goes beyond the common teaching techniques normally followed in classrooms.

The kaleidoscope of dramatic activities and the provision ofhigh-quality, classroom-tested strategiespresented in her book, together with the theoretical foundations on which they are based, are outlined and designed to be easily incorporated into content area classrooms. Participation in such activities in a non-threatening atmosphere helps to accelerate the learners’ speech fluency and communicative competence to a level at which they are challenged without being frustrated.

This book provides guidance in the form of conducting dramatic activities that contribute to a high level of student-engagement and interaction. Teachers can make a judicious choice from the vast range of dramatic activities provided, in order to capture the interest of all students and help nurture a love for and a better understanding of English Literature for their students.

The author offers new perspectives on innovative pedagogical strategies to kindle the interest of second language learners and motivate them intrinsically. With her professional expertise, Dr Bernadette has been able to identify multiple access points to the curriculum. She has skilfully adapted prose/poetry topics, stories from prescribed English textbooks and even popular songs, to dramatic activities in classroom teaching, for different age and stage levels. The words of a wise sailor“While we cannot control the wind, we can adjust our sails.” testifies to her ingenuity for positive action.
